documentation of a tintype session at my studio

The tintype is a photographic technique from the 19th century, the first to be accessible to the middle class. By applying a small amount of collodion (a cotton derivative) onto a metal plate and immersing it in a silver nitrate bath, a tangible image appears, just as it did two hundred years ago. As early as the 1850s, especially in the United States, even the most ordinary workers could visit a studio to have their portrait taken on a metal plate, thus asserting their existence.
My practice is primarily based in my studio, but my portable darkroom allows me to shoot outdoors and in the personal environments of individuals. This flexibility enables me to connect with people in their own spaces, capturing them in intimate settings that reveal more than just their appearance—offering a deeper sense of who they are. These enduring archives help move forward the narrative of our lives, infusing meaning into our present and preserving the memory of our communities.
